Important announcement

Hi all,

There were a lot of students who missed last week's chem O training due to IHC. Be advised that material covered last week was a bit more advanced and is quite important. Please download the presentation slides titled "Carbonyl Compound Extended learning" from Raffles connect.

Its also important you learn the approach to writing mechanisms, so make use of the imine and enamine formation mechanisms, as well as ester formation/hydrolysis mechanism for good practice.

By the way, ester formation (and reactions involving carboxylic acid derivatives) mostly involve nucleophilic acyl substitution.

The section on enolates is particularly important.

Since I taught quite a bit more material than just what is in the presentation slides, I strongly advise you to read up on those topics covered.

Back from 40th IChO, Budapest

Hi all!

I just got back from the 40th IChO held in Budapest.

It was a blast, really fun, and I'll share with you all during the Chem O training.

I also bring good news (I guess most of you know it already)

Singapore scored 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronzes during the IChO.

The gold and silver comes from RJC. (bronzes from NUS high)

Gold - Yeong Li Qian
He also topped the theory paper (beating the russians, PRCs, koreans etc etc!!!) and is ranked overall world number 2 for this IChO

Silver - Wang Yong Jin
Ranked overall no 41. nearly gold since that starts at rank 30.

You can check the actual results (along with percentage scores up to 4 dps!!) for them at
http://www.icho.hu/Files/40thIChO_list.pdf

and also download all the tasks, questions, answers, and publications at
www.icho.hu

Well done RJC!

In the meantime here's some admin:

1) If you don't already know, I've uploaded the notes to week 4 (just before I left on 11 July)
2) I will upload the notes for this week by today. (I just came back!! so this is ASAP already)

Cheers!

Powerpoint Slides on Raffles Connect

Hi all,

Powerpoint slides used for lessons are uploaded onto Raffles Connect. Please go download for your use.

The original powerpoint file is just way to big to be uploaded and downloaded easily, so I've done the following:

1) Separate the presentation into parts
2) Convert the presentation into Flash format.

To view the slides, simply click on the links to open the presentation.

You can also save and download the .swf (flash) file onto your own computer, and at your convenience open it later on using your webbrowser, like Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Your web browser must have the Flash plug-in installed (its from Adobe - Macromedia)
When opening the file, the web browser may warn you about active X controls and stop opening the file, you should click on the options to proceed with opening the file.

MO Theory materials, as well as all the briefing materials are now on Raffles Connect.
